Camping With Charcoal

You know, of the fun of camping is having a campfire.  A couple of weeks ago when I was camping with my three little car girl Grand girls, I showed them how to find a nice piece of charcoal to draw with.  They wanted me to draw them, so we used paper plates as a canvas.  They dearly love to "pose" for photos and was more than happy to pose for some campfire charcoal portraits.  They took the portraits and hung them in their little bunk cubbies.  So, we again went camping last week end and again, Grandma had to do another round of portraits.  The littlest car girl wanted one with her Papa.  And, I tried a gesture effort of one of the camp dogs.  Drawing with campfire charcoal is not too much different than using vine charcoal, except it is very soft and sometimes you do not have a clue as to what the line will look like... sometimes fat sometimes skinny.  And it smears really easily.  These were sprayed with hair spray but they still smear a bit.

And, the camp coffee pot which holds an amazing 3 gallons!  Whew!

Carol, you're a true survivor, or a true outdoor girl. Remind me, when the world goes to pits, to invite you along!!!! drawing portraits on paper plates. I love it... nice rendition. How perfectly lovely. Have a great trip, my friend!

I would love to try charcoal soon. I bought some white charcoal chalk and thought that I'd use them with my graphite pencils..but they don't because graphite is too soft and smooth. So charcoal is my next thing for sure ^^

These little car girl drawings are just charming! What a brilliant idea to use charcoal and paper plates. A 3 gallon coffeepot? My goodness, however do you A) pick it up to pour, and B) drink that much? lol nancy

You've captured the essence of art, Carol. To live in the moment and use the materials at hand to express that is genius!

I LOVE camping! And doing portraits with campfire charcoal would be the highlight of any trip for me! I love the two on paper plates. And wow! where can I get a three gallon coffee pot? No, please don't tell me. My habit is bad enough as it is!

Ha ha--love the campfire charcoal idea. I'll have to try that with my future grandkids (first one is on the way). I especially like the paper plate portraits. What a fine memory for the kiddies.

Can't say as I like charcoal because of the mess of it but you did a nice job doing your portraits. I think that was a perfect place and time for charcoal! Taking it from the fire has got to be a memory those girls won't forget soon.

Amazing, Carol, the paper plates look like holy halos for the little angels! (Girl dog included!)
