Book Study Aside

.

Over in the group mmartfriends, we are doing a book study-Stitch Alchemy by Kelli Perkins.  And how lucky are we that kelli is participating with us!  She mentioned some crows she had published in one of the Sommerset magazines in 2007-back before I even know Sommerset existed as I was still spending all my time engrossed in my job!  After a bit of discussion with kelli about her crows I decided to make some.  I found this cut out of a jack daw (some sort of crowy/raven bird) that I have been using for a stencil for like forever (you know how you have your favorite things) and I traced that to make a pattern.  Then if you visited me last winter, you will remember I was into "felting" for a while.  I made an ugly purse with a sunface on it.  I pulled the sunface off and used the purse through the winter.  (This winter I am using a black purse I found at a yard sale).  Now, I have cut up the purse to make the crows.  I loved working on the felted wool.  These only have repurposed materials... the wool I felted from yard sale finds, the yellow velvet left over from my dining room chairs recovering project (do you remember that post?).  The little embroidered stars and flowers from a yard sale, as are all the beads.  The embellishing was fun too. Above is before I added embelling, below is after.  I have made more since the photos, I just keep making them they are so fun and cute. Now, I am thinking of making these guys a "nest" to congregate in.

Love your Jackdaws. I miss the Magpies we used to see when living in Colorado. I think I'll make a flock of them to hang around my studio. Your work is very inspiring.

They are so alive with personality; you should give them each a name tag.
